Pistacchio

E no, io non suono.

Anna Maria Gentili ~ Lillehammer Blues

Oscar 2025 (my previsions) ~ part one: Furiosa, a Mad Max Saga

Tonight we saw Furiosa ~ a Mad Max Saga.

Ok, I’m a Hokuto no Ken child, and I just loved Mad Max, so I was a little afraid they would ruin it.

Well, they didn’t!

The world is so perfectly buildt, the environment, the mood, the characters..everything fit in, and wasteland has never been so true to itself!

🏜️

Anya Taylor Joy does an excellent job, in this role, as well as Chris Hensworth (I was a little doubtful about the last one, actually).

🏜️

Am I smelling Oscar 2025 nominations here? Absolutely! Make up and costumes, of course, sound was amazing and the filming, along with the photography. I’m not sure about the performances, very good but maybe not so «strong» to reach the nominations level.

🏜️

Looking forward to see if I guessed right!

 Happy st. Patrick’s day, everyone!

To celebrate this day I’m posting a throwback to my trip to Dublin, few years ago, with this photo shot inside the Guinness factory. As always I’m trying to investigate the origins of this day: we can easily find out that all we know about St. Patrick was written by the man himself, except the date of this death, obviously.

~
The Celts were celebrating spring equinox, as many other cultures around the worlds, in those days, so, by using the common practice of syncretism, there’s a huge probability that the date was later fixed by christians in a day preceding the spring equinox. Actually, even if people were unofficial celebrating St. Patrick in those days, the day was not fixed until the 17th century.
~
Btw, did you know that Guinness beer is now a totally vegan beer? It may sound strange to point that out, but if you watch at the ingredients list of many (MANY) other beers, you’ll find isinglass, a fish derivate hugely used to clarify the beer. Just check at carnivore.com, to find a list of all the vegan and non vegan beers, and your mind will be blown away.
~
But now: let’s enjoy st. Patrick day with friends and a glass of something good!

Slàinte!

Guilty Pleasure: Oscar Night 2023

As every year I wait in excitement for the Oscar night (even if often the movies I would like to see there are not nominated), but I still think it's fun to see who's winning, to try to understand the world we live in. The winners of the Oscar night are often the most "feelgood" and "politically correct" movies, so even if some of these may be good, they often aren't. The ongoing war in ucraine is of course influencing the nominees and the winners, and as always actuality is mirrored in moviemaking. the realism in movies is still going strong, as it should be. Just try not to just follow one stream of thought, try to think freely in any situation.

I've been guessing the nominations, and tried hard to watch as many movies as possible, even though here in Norway many movies'll come after their eventual victory.

So here it come my personal opinions on the nominated I got to watch. It may be a winner here, or maybe not. Enjoy the night, the red carpet, and try and watch some good movies, not only the "blockbusters", with huge productions and little meaning. Here we go!

«We are in great haste to construct a magnetic telegraph from Maine to Texas; but Maine and Texas, it may be, have nothing important to communicate,» skrev filosof og forfatter Henry David Thoreau om tomheten som kan medfølge teknologiske fremskritt.

21st April - Rome

21st April
~
I’m going to keep it simple: happy birthday Rome.
You’re the best city in the whole world, with both history, amazing atmosphere, wonderful people and good food.

I still cherish all the memories of those years I spent living there, walking your streets, breathing your air, driving like crazy in your crazy traffic, running to catch the bus or riding around all night on your night bus.
~
It was some incredible years, and you gave me so much, that I’m totally sure you’ve got a big part of my heart stored someplace between those old stones.

Caro Vinicio.

Caro Vinicio (Capossela),

Cosa sarei senza?

Dublin, and some thoughts.

I shot this picture in one of my trips to Dublin, some years ago.
I want to share this very picture for some different reasons, which I’m going to explain to you now.
First of all, I see some kind of ironic philosophy here. The all dressed up skeleton reminds us in some way that work will kill you, but with his last breath he whispers not to worry. the dead one advices us not to worry, because that’s not worth it.
So, in these times when we don’t know exactly how to act, what to feel, who to believe: don’t worry. death will come and put things in perspective again.
Put all your worries aside, there’s no time to waste, there’s no energy to waste in worries: just live. Don’t think about your work, just live.
The second thoughts I want to spend on this picture is that I miss travel. I’ve said it before, and I’m not quite finished yet saying it: I love traveling and I miss it.
I just love that "child watching outside on a train window seeing things for the first time" feelings. I feel that when I travel I find my place, I like feeling little and nonsense, and the best place to feel that is somewhere where nobody knows you, and where nobody notice you. Dublin was a place like that, with sparkling life and music at every corner, in every street, people singing people reading out loud from books or poetry they just had written, the food scent all around, the dark pubs full of persons who had never met earlier and which would have never met later either, probably, but who were best friends or lovers for the time of a beer.
God! I loved Dublin! All the colors, the noise, the beer and all that life!
I actually have one other reasons I wanted to share with this picture. I was thinking about how things were then and the difference with how things are now, all that people who walked with me for a long or short period and which I lost along the way.
Feelings are just as ethereal as the summer breeze. They come and go, incessantly, ineluctably. I remember holding the hand of a friend, I remember trying to figure her out, trying to dig in all that darkness, trying to light that darkness up. I remember giving it all up then, I remember being tired, sad, disillusioned. I remember misunderstandings, jealousy, rage, and the remoteness that followed.
But again: no worries. I’ve learned after all to let it go, to laugh at my pain, because even if I feel a little more hardened than before, more ironic, more cynical maybe, I truly feel good when I let it go. And even if "sometimes they come back", they’re just a laugh away from balance. I feel I forgave everyone for the pain they’ve caused, But at the same time I don’t really have energy to spare for them.

Fotografen Anna Maria Gentili fortsetter hennes reise i Jantelovens mørke verden.

Guess what: hun sa ja.

“She is like a flower, growing up from
below the pavement.
Beautiful, fragile but determined.”

24 Hour Comics Day 2018 - Getting started!

So it's that time of the year again! Autumn comes, and takes with it wonderful colors, rainy days, darkness and drawing challenges. I actually look forward to these days every year, so now finally I can sit here and draw in peace! I'll try to stream as good as I can, but I moved in the middle of the norwegian woods last year, so I've been experiencing some kind of problems... but this is nothing if compared to these beautiful woods, so I'll dolike this: I'll stream a little bit, then I'll record some videos and for the rest og the time I’ll just draw and upload pictures in the making, how does that sound? The Art of never Fitting in.

To be different is a gift, to think with your own head is an enrichment - this believes photographer Anna Maria Gentili.
By: Arne Børresen
Published
On friday afternoon the 42 years old italian photographer will open her new exhibition "The Art of never fitting inn" in her atelier "Den Lille Gale" (The Little Crazy Thing"), in the Dunkejon garden. Here she'll translate with pictures she shot herself how is it to live outside of the mainstream. society.

Homophiles and "wrong" proportions.

– I think of myself like a little crazy. I've got my opinions, hate the small-talk, I don't care about mainstream fashion and often other people think I'm strange.
That's why I believ I'm perfect for this project - says the italian who moved to Norway for twelve years ago.
– What do you mean by the title of the project?
– I've got pictures of eleven persons, eight women and three men, and everyone of them has experienced what is like to be different. We talk about homophily, about having a body which someone calls "wrong" but that actually is amazing and perfect just as it is, and someone who had a difficult past. One of my model for eksemple is a journalist who's been accused to enjoy documenting sad and tragic histories. We've got no A4 people here!

Photography and therapy

Anna Maria Gentili is not a newby in the art of photography. She had exhibitions in different lands and has been active since schooldays, back in Italy.
-I got my first camera when I was eleven years old, and I've develodep a strong belief for the voice of the picture. I've never taken photojobs, it would be like I had to censore myself. I don't want photography to be a "job", it would be boring and burocratic. Taking pictures is a kind of therapy for me, an exit where I come in a world where feelings and ideas can finally run free.

On friday the 14th the exhibition will open its doors. From 18:00 o'clock Francesca Tullio will take us to a spiritual music trip to show us the beauty of being yourself

Kunsten av å ikke passe inn.

It's just two weeks to the opening of my new exhibition: Kunsten av å ikke passe inn.

If you try to translate the phrase it would sound something like: The art of never fitting in. I sure feel I've never fit in, any place and any time.
I started this project because after moving to Norway I was explained that many people still live following the so called "Law of Jante", maybe even unintentionally.
It's a law about being together against the different, even if many has interpretated it as a kind of social law. No one should believe they're better than others, and it could sound cool.

I've come to a different interpretation, though and I'm pretty sure that's the real meaning behind the words of Sandemose, the writer who described the unwritten law in his novel En flyktning krysser sitt spor.
The flyer

When I moved to Norway I didn't quite know what to expect. I had been here on vacation, and I had a feeling that people were nice and not afraid of people coming from other countries. I moved inn with a friend who eventually became my husband, and he was terrified by my attitude. He then explained me the Law of Jante, he told me that if I continued showing myself with my stupid exaggerated hats, and my gipsy jewelries I would never make new friends, because I shouldn't believe I was something.

I then tried to be invisible, to satisfy him and the distorted image of norwegian people he had painted into my head, but I deeply inside didn't quite manage to accept I was acting like I was someone else.

I used to have many friends back in Italy, but in Norway it seemed to be very difficult to get known with other people, and he pointed that I could not just say what I ment, if I wanted to be accepted: I was scaring people away.

It went some years before I understood that he was the one who was broken by the Law of Jante, and he was trying to break me down, to make me fit in. But I didn't want that! I have to thank my first real friend in Norway for that, Tone Susann. She never judged me, she never criticized me or my way of being. She accepted me with all my wrong, twisted sides, and she opene up my eyes. She took time to explain me things, to show me Norway and norwegian people for what they really are and I liked to listen to her point of view about things. I didn't always share the same point of view, but she made me think about things, she made me wonder. She made me in some way find back to my original me.

I had never fought to fit in in my youth, I've actually never cared about fitting in. If people couldn't just take me as I was, they could as well go to hell. They weren't worth it.

So I thought about saying it loud: I hate this Law! The Law of Jante is shit!

Tone Susann - one of my models, and my best friend

I have been thinking about this photoproject for a very long time. My ex husband was afraid I would have gathered some enemies by expressing my opinion about this old and retrograde law, and sometimes I cought myself pondering.

Was I ready to say it loud? Was I afraid I would have been attacked by people who still hung on in a nostalgic way to this old way of thinking?

Was I strong enough to take the critics which eventually was coming my way?

The answers to all these questions came when I finally break free from that psychological cage. I didn't need to follow that rule anymore: I was free!
When I published my call for models I was overwhelmed by how many wanted to tell me their stories. The Law of Jante had influenced someone in a very hard way, while someone else had just danced themselves over it. It has been some exciting months, I've been talking to those who wanted to cohoperate with me and I've been shooting pictures of them, which we carefully planned. We chose the locations, we chose the clothes, we chose the feeling we wanted to share with the viewer. We laughed a lot, sometimes we cried too, we felt it on our skin, and it wasn't always pretty.

Now the exhibition is ready, and I want to share it with you.

Opening day will be the 14th of september, at my sweet, little atelier in Fredrikstad and I'm very excited.

Midgardsblòt 2018

~ Midgardsblòt ~

For those who don’t know: the blòt is a sacrifice, and the Midgrad is the part of the Earth where humans live.

The Midgrad Rune welcoming us in the woods.

The festival purpose is to reenact this ceremony, sprinkling the blood of the sacrifical victime all over the participants, the walls and the statues of the gods. Pretty gore, isn’t it? But hei, we’re talking about the vikings!

The viking area.

Everything is made to resemble the old vikings artifacts, people use old, forgotten techniques to make weapons, jewelry, clothes and everiday stuff.

Find your way.

Viking jewelry.

Musicians are playing replicas of ancient music instruments, and very often they make these instruments themselves, after a long process of studying and searching.

The Gildehall.

The Gildehall.

A woman braiding her hair

Some viking shops.

There’s also a good deal of black metal at this festival, even if the focus is absolutely not on that kind of music.

Watain.

We left with a feeling that we had experienced something absolutely special, and the magic of the place has in some way filled us completely, and strenghten the bond between us.

Me trying to look mysterious

22 January 2018

Here we go with my new project!

I am going to start a new project, in February. I am going to fight for everyone's right to stop acting, just to fit in. I never fit in, I never had, but I never cared, actually. I know that many, especially young people, have a hard time trying to fit in.

But guess what? There's no reason to try, you don't need to!
We are NOT alike, so why should we try to become a constrained copy of each other?

I feel this extremely strong here in Norway, I will explain you in detail soon. Now I've gathered 11 strong and brave persons who'll be my models for the project, and I am extremely excited to see how this will go. I will update my blog once in a while to hold you up to date with the project, and just feel free to send me tips and ideas.

Exhibitions will follow, both in Norway and in Italy, so you'll be able to come and see my work in real life, and not just online.

Stay tuned, then, and wish me luck!

And for God's sake: be yourself, always.

Desucon - Cosplay Convention in Oslo

Hi everyone!

So autumn is here and as every year it's time for some cosplay convention. I don't do cosplay myself but I believe its very inspiring. I admire people who dedicate most of their free time to sew and design their own outfit, sometime they teach themselves to do it. That's wonderful!

These last years has cosplay started to bloom in Norway too. I didn't believe it could have worked here, but I didn't count the strengt of the syncretism.

Yes, the syncretism between the old, good established norwegian traditions wich melts extremely too good with the art of the cosplay. Every cosplayer designs and then sews his or her costume on their own, and they often use old pieces of old fabric or rusted metal parts from old machines to fix the costumes, and here in Norway it's nowaday very popular with knitting, sewing, diy and re-design, so the ground is ready to be sawed.

However what's particular in Norway is the "Janteloven", a sort of an unwritten law (oh well, it's written in a book. A danish book. And it was actually ment sarcastically) which stops people from excelling, but lead them to humility instead. Norwegians are terrified by the idea of excelling in something, and if they accidentally do they know they have soon to show their weak side, to be accepted back in the community. So there's not so many who actually take cosplaying seriously. The most part of them take it as a game.

The Cosplay Catwalk at Desucon is not a competition, everyone can walk it, jump, dance alone or in gorups. The Cosplay battle is just for fun too. The moves are improvised, the battle are unlikely to happen, even in the fantasy world these characters live in, but above all: there's no winner here either.

Then there's the Cosplay Contest, the real one. Not many people had actually applied and, with a few exceptions, they hadn't prepare a proper show. Someone had done it though, and I truly believe they had done a good job.

So Christina Erring was chosen as a winner, and she will represent Norway in London next year. She was wearing an awesome Diablo 3 Wizard costume and her performance was both funny and entertaining.

So here is some more pictures. See you soon!

Desucon 2017 - Reportage

Desucon, Oslo kongressenter, 21 october 2017.

Welcome to the party.

Desucon, the biggest cosplay meeting in Norway, was held last weekend in the Congress Center, in the heart of the «Tigerstad», Oslo. It lasted just this one Saturday, from 13:00 to around 19:00, and in addition to the cosplay contest had some interesting meetings happening too.

When describing this little convention one must always have in mind that cosplaying is still a very new and unknown phenomenon for Norway, a country which’s profoundly anchored to its traditions and its own art forms. I must see I noticed a little wider audience than last time I visited Desucon, and people is actually starting to choose some less known characters. There were not so many Pikachus, for eksempel.

How the day went.

I arrived just after the official openings (those who had bought the V.I.P. ticket could enter already at 12:00, and had some special discounts at the stands). The Kodama Forest was about to start their show, guarded by a bunch of Stormtroopers, There were already plenty of people in the auditorium and I was amazed about how quiet can young people be when they are interested in something. The Kodama Forest is a little orchestra playing games and manga themes in their own way, they are from Oslo and they are often invited performing when anime are screened in theaters.

I then grabbed a program and started to move around the Congress Center to attend to the lectures happening around. Some of these meetings were happening at the same time, so I had to prioritize, and walk from the one to the other while the speakers was still talking.

I first stopped watching some of the speedfriending, a light version of speeddating between people interested in the cosplay world. They were sitting in two rows, facing one another, and had a few minutes to introduce themselves to each others. The room was full of young people and they seemed to have a great time.

I then moved on to the Balder room to listen about how participants to the cosplay contest had found their inspiration and had build up their costumes. Much of the job was handmade, often from old things found in loft and cellars, and this is probably the most exciting part of making a cosplay costume in Norway, where one can clearly see some trace of this newborn syncretism between the old norwegian tradition of sewing and «gjenbruk» (re-utilize) and the cosplay trend.

I left the cosplay contest room and rushed to the Odin room, to listen to the kimono lecture which was about to start. That was a very interesting one, for those who are curious about the art and use of this traditional outfit, and guests had the chance of trying it on at the end of the lecture. Two or three of the girls attending had a kimono on, and I could hear the soft trill og some tiny bells hanging somewhere. We learned that many collects different kinds of kimono, that there’s a code for both the materials, the colors and the shapes and of course the price. People can use a sort of everyday kimono at work, for example, but for special occasions there’s strict rules about how the kimono must be. When a girl finishes school she has to wear a special kind of kimono, the flagging arms kimono, which’s very expensive. So «a man with many daughters is a poor man», they use to say in Japan, and that’s because of the kimonos.
We also learn about the shoes, the belts and even the man kimono, which is much more simple than the other.

While the lectures is going on there’s something happening on the stage. Characters are simulating fights against other characters. This is just for fun, it seems completely improvised to me and the audience is choosing who fought better, by clapping and yelling. And it’s amazing to see how many people is sitting in the auditorium watching this peculiar performance.

While the auditorium is so getting ready for the cosplay catwalk I walk by the drop-in cosplay zone, where people is meeting the judges of the contest to show their costume and reach the Balder room again to learn how to become a superhero. The lecture is actually interesting, Melina Edvardsen is very passionate about the issue and she has a lot of tips about how to get started with the whole concept, where to find some inspiration and what to prioritize before a catwalk or a contest. The whole is filled with funny trivia from her own experience as a cosplayer and that makes the lecture even more enjoying to attend.

I then take a look in the japan quick course before I go back to the auditorium and watch some of the catwalk. People is really having a good time, and that’s too very peculiar for the norwegian cospalyers: they never take themselves too serious, even if the amount of work behind a costume is conspicuous.

It’s now 16:00 and I decide to have some lunch break, while the program doesn’t stop so I miss bothe the «how to draw manga» and «cosplay make up» lectures, but I am back early enough to take a look at the stands and find a good place in the auditorium minutes before the cosplay contest finale is starting.

There’s not many stands actually. Some of them sell plushes and gadgets, while just a few propose handcrafted items, like horns, props and other accessories.

There’s not many contestants in the finale, so it all happens very fast. After a brief break they announce the winners of each category, and the winner of the whole contest who’s going to the next year Eurocosplay contest, in London: Christina Errings with a beautiful performance of the Diablo 3 wizard.
After announcing the winners Desucon has arranged a disco-like event for the cosplayers, so I decide to go home.

Some personal observations.

As I told earlier cosplay is still growing up in Norway. Lot of people here has never heard about manga or anime, and even less has heard about cosplaying. The japanese and even corean trend has been slowly approaching for years, and it doesn’t have it easy because of the strong local traditions and uses. I actually believe that it will never reach much more popularity that it has right now, but of course: I can be wrong. It has been growing very slowly up here, and it will never become comparable to american comics. It’s still amazing how Concrew, a bunch of volunteers, has the will to organize this big meeting in Oslo. They call it «con» while this is actually a safe place for norwegian cosplay lovers to meet and make new friends. There’s not so many cosplayers in the contest, the most part of people walk the stage just for fun and to feel to be a part of this little quiet movement. As mentioned they do not take themselves too seriously, they’re still not brave enough to do it. I am very excited to see if this will change in a year or two or if this party feeling will stay unchanged.
